Tegucigalpa (Fides Service) - About 650 young people from dioceses, youth groups and movements from all over the country attended the 3rd National Missionary Youth Meeting 29 to 31 October in Danli (92 km from Tegucigalpa), which closed the missionary month of October. The event was organised by the National Office of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Honduras with the generous help of young people in Danli and local families who provided accommodation for the young visitors.
The objective of the Meeting was to “help young people proceed in their missionary commitment in the footsteps of the 2nd American Mission Congress CAM 2”. In keeping with Pope John Paul II’s message for World Mission Sunday, activities focussed on Eucharist and Mission, Father Guido Plante, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Honduras informed Fides.
The Meeting opened on October 29 with a Procession with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Danli to San Sebastian Plaza where Bishop Romulo Emiliani Sanchez, auxiliary of San Pedro Sula (Honduras) spoke to the young people about the importance of prayer while about 12 priests were available for the sacrament of reconciliation. This was followed by a Concelebration of the Eucharist presided by Rev Walter Amaya, diocesan director of the PMS in Santa Rosa de Copan. On Saturday 30 October the young participants reflected on two themes: “Families, young people and children agents of Mission” and “Missionary Instances”. After listening to missionary testimony the young people were given an introduction to the Central American ad gentes Missionary Plan. On Sunday 31 grouped by diocese, the young people identified concrete objectives for the coming months. The 3rd National Missionary Youth Meeting concluded with a solemn Mass presided by Archbishop Antonio Arcari, papal Nuncio in Honduras. (R.Z.) (Agenzia Fides 5/11/2004; righe 27, parole 349)
