AFRICA/KENYA - Kenyans celebrates victory of black US Senator of Kenyan origin

Wednesday, 3 November 2004

Nairobi (Fides Service) - The Kenyan family of Barack Obama - the only black person to be elected to the US Senate in 2004 - are celebrating his victory in the state of Illinois. The son of a Kenyan father and American mother, Mr Obama won his seat after defeating a black Republican.
The news of his election was welcomed in Kenya, a country traditionally close to the United States and the scene of a tragic bomb blast at the US Embassy in 1998. National radio and TV in Kenya gave more prominence to the election of Senator Obama than the duel between Bush and Kerry for the White House. Obama’s father was from the village of Nyang'oma where people suffer unemployment and spreading AIDS. Many Kenyans hope Obama may be able to lead the United States to pay more attention to Africa.
