VATICAN - The Pope’s weekly teaching at the general audience: the hymn of the redeemed: “The centre of praise is Christ and his historic work of redemption. He is able to decipher the meaning of history ”

Vatican City (Fides) - During the general audience this morning Wednesday November 3, Pope John Paul II focussed his teaching on the canticle, “The hymn of the redeemed” (cfr Revelation 4,11; 5,9.10.12; Vespers Tuesday week 2,: Rev 4,11; 5,9.10): “the hymn is part of the Revelation’s solemn opening vision which presents a sort of Heavenly Liturgy with which we, still pilgrims on earth, are associated during our ecclesial celebrations” the Pope explained.
The hymn is based on two principal elements: the first, only briefly outlined, is the celebration of the Lord’s work, while the second, more amply developed, is praise to Christ, the immolated Lamb. “So praise concentrates on Christ and his work of redemption. He alone therefore is to able to decipher the meaning of history: he alone can «break open the seals» of the secret book containing God’s project. His work is not only of interpretation it is also an act of fulfilment and liberation. Because he was «slain», he is able to «purchase» men and women of every race and tongue, of every people and nation.”
The hymn concludes with a final acclamation for the «slain Lamb», to whom is attributed the same glory as God the Father because «he is worthy to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honour and glory and praise». “This is the moment of pure contemplation, joyful praise, song of love for Christ in his paschal mystery. This luminous picture of heavenly glory is anticipated in the Church’s Liturgy. In fact... those who celebrate it here, already live, in a way, beyond the signs, the heavenly Liturgy, where worship is full communion and rejoicing”. (S.L.)
