AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Preparations for 3rd American Mission Congress (2007) start with meeting of PMS national directors and presidents of mission commissions

Thursday, 21 October 2004

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The first preparatory meeting for CAM 3, the third American Mission Congress scheduled for 2007 in Ecuador, was held from 11 to 13 October 2004 at the head offices of the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences CELAM in Bogota (Colombia). Father Padre Daniele Lagni, national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Brazil reported on the event to Fides. The purpose of the meeting was to draft and programme of activities and suggestions with regard to the main theme, slogan, hymn, method, number of participants.
Participants included national PMS director and the President of the commission for mission of the Bishops of Ecuador, (where Cam 3 will be held), the PMS national director in Argentina a (where CAM 1 was held), the PMS national director of Guatemala (where CAM 2 was held), the President of the Missions Department of the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences (DEMIS- CELAM) and the PMS national director in Brazil (where COMLA 5 will be held).
Father Daniele Lagni, PMS national director in Brazil traced the development of the COMLA meetings from Mexico 1997 to CAM 2 in Guatemala 2003 which included all America. Since two important events, CAM 3 and 5th general conference of CELAM are planned for 2007, it was suggested that since the CAM 3 agenda should be based on CELAM findings, the Continental meeting could be postponed until 2008. Another suggestion was to encourage regional mission congresses in preparation for the Third American Mission Congress.
Father Lagni said the meeting led to the formulation of proposals which will be sent to the Bishops of Ecuador and to the CAM 3 central organising committee for examination and eventual approval. Questions regarding CAM 3 will be discussed by a meeting next year of PMS directors of America, Caribbean and Antilles 1 to 5 March 2005 in Brasilia. (R.Z.)
