ASIA/INDONESIA - Religious communities work to promote reconciliation and peace- local Catholic Church holds Synod

Friday, 15 October 2004

Ambon (Fides Service) - Religious communities in the Moluccas want to build a future of peace for their islands through more commitment at the level of education and social initiatives to promote a culture of peace, especially among the younger generations.
The Catholic diocese of Amboina is holding a Synod from 12 to 24 October, only the second such assembly since the diocese was created on 3 January 1961. This is an important opportunity for the local Catholic community to reflect on the situation with regards the activity of the Church , but also its activity in society to help settle violent clashes between Muslim immigrants and resident Protestants in which thousands were killed.
During the Synod the diocese will inaugurate its new Cathedral in Ambon and there will also be the ordination of nine deacons and a priest for the diocese.
Last month, 14 September the community celebrated the 10th anniversary of the installation of Bishop Petrus Canisius Mandagi as Bishop of Amboina. The entire community gathered to celebrate and thank the Bishop for his outstanding work to promote peace and reconciliation.
The local Church has always sought to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation with the local Muslim community. Recently Bishop Mandagi sent a message to the local Muslim community on the occasion of the start of the Muslim month of fasting and prayer Ramadan.
