Friday, 25 January 2013

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - "Here I am Lord, send me" was the theme of the Day of Volunteering organized by the Commission for the hospital Pastoral Care of the Diocese of Hong Kong, to promote the pastoral care in health centers in the Year of Faith. According to reports from Kung Kao Po, the weekly newsletter of the Diocese of Hong Kong, more than 300 pastoral workers and volunteers took part in the Day which was presided over by Cardinal John Tong Hon, Bishop of the diocese of Hong Kong. On the occasion the "Manual of volunteers," was presented and the three volunteers who dedicated more time to the sick in these past two years were awarded. In addition, 113 new volunteers received a formation diploma in hospital pastoral care. The Commission was established in 1991 to respond to new social needs: in fact, the Church became increasingly aware that medical care was not sufficient for the sick, but throughout their illness they also needed spiritual and moral assistance. Today, the Commission, through its 353 workers and volunteers officially registered, work in 30 hospitals in the region with a special "pastoral Department" established in each hospital. This commitment is supported financially by the diocese of Hong Kong. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 25/01/2013)
