AMERICA/MEXICO - Three million working children live in extreme situations of slavery
Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - In Mexico, about three million children are exploited in the worst forms of child labor, andwe are talking about all of them, but only the "worst." They live extreme situations of slavery and practices such as child trafficking, commercial and sexual exploitation or are being used for illegal activities. In the Latin American country 20 million people (out of a population of over 100 million inhabitants) do housework and for at least 2 million of them, half are girls, this activity hides exploitation. Three million work in poor conditions. 33% work more than 35 hours per week, while 10% have no fixed schedule, even if the victims are under 13 years of age. Recently the authorities of Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia, Mexico and Argentina are developing laws to prosecute this crime. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 15/01/2013)
