AMERICA/MEXICO - Worrying situation of poverty among Mexican children and adolescents
Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - In Mexico, to be a child, teenager means being exposed to the risk of poverty, because of the discrimination suffered by age. According to estimates by CONEVAL-UNICEF (2010), in the country, 80% of children under 18 years of age suffer from some deficiencies. 53% of all child and adolescent Mexican population of approximately 20 million, live in poverty. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the fact that these children are not considered citizens in all respects.
Social exclusion for millions of boys and girls is particularly high in groups without family care or institutional assistance. Among these we find girls, indigenous, illiterate, pregnant. In 2012 the annual toll prepared by the organizations of the Network for the Rights of Children in Mexico (REDIM) revealed that in 2012 children and adolescents in Mexico are 40.4 million.
