AMERICA/COSTA RICA - Worrying storms are beating down on the country

San José (Agenzia Fides) - Floods and landslides have been continuing in Costa Rica since last week. According to the Comisión Nacional de Emergencia (CNE), the Caribbean coastal areas are the most affected. In Matina, 80 kilometers east of the capital San José, heavy rains are severely damaging homes and several access roads to the villages. Because of landslides a main road linking the capital and the eastern city of Limón has been closed. In addition, the CNE controls the flow of at least six rivers whose banks have overflown and keeps the whole territory under observation. The National Meteorological Institute has foreseen precipitation in the Caribbean, and in the north, and precipitation in the central regions and isolated rains on the Pacific coast. The rains and strong winds, up to 90 km/h, will protect the passage of the cold air mass in the area. Authorities are calling for more vigilance in the worst affected areas, and warn about possible dangerous turbulence for aircraft. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 23/11/2012)
