ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - New diocese of Uijongbu on the border with North Korea takes first steps

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - With a meeting of all its priests the newly created diocese of Uijongbu, situated close to the border with north Korea, took its first steps to organise pastoral activity . The Council of Presbyters discussed how to build Catholic communities which are concerned with the needs of the people around, a pastoral ministry which is open to all and a clergy open to all people.
The Council agreed on the need to build harmony and unity among the priests so they can encourage each other in a vision full of hope, trust in God and love for others.
The Council said the means should be found to help Catholics to live the faith especially the joy of liturgical celebrations which give the strength to spread joy among other people.
At present, in response to calls for evangelisation launched by the Church in Korea, more than 170 priests from Seoul archdiocese opted to serve in the new diocese of Uijongbu, where the people are very poor. These priests will be working in an underdeveloped area with their eyes on North Korea a field for evangelisation where the Catholics in the South long to carry the vivifying word of God as soon as possible.
