EUROPE/SPAIN - Food is a basic right, not recognized to 850 million people

Tuesday, 16 October 2012

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - Today, October 16th, the world celebrates World Food Day, a fundamental human right not recognized to about 850 million people. This law requires that everyone - men, women, children, people who live alone or entire communities - at all times, have physical and economic access to adequate food or means for its purchase. In its latest report released by the FAO, "The State of Food Insecurity 2012," sees an important drop of more than 130 million people suffering from malnutrition in the world. However those who still suffer from hunger are about 850 million, which is inconceivable in a world full of resources for all. The right to food requires that States take steps to provide a favorable environment in which people can fully use their potential to produce and obtain adequate food for themselves and their families.
