ASIA/INDIA - Erection of the Diocese of Udupi and appointment of the first Bishop
Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Benedict XVI on July 16, 2012 erected the diocese of Udupi (India) taken from the territory of the diocese of Mangalore, making it a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and appointed the first bishop His Excellency Mons . Gerald Isaac Lobo, transferring him from the diocese of Shimoga. The new diocese of Udupi (nom. lat. Udupien/sis/), includes the three civil districts of Udupi, Kunapura and Karkala and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bangalore. The parish church of Our Lady of Miracles becomes the Church- Cathedral of the newly erected diocese. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 16/7/2012)
