AFRICA/BURKINA FASO - Manga diocese to benefit from a water project to save rain water

Thursday, 30 September 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - The Italian Movement to eliminate hunger MLFM and the Association Africa Calls started in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano are collaborating on a water project for the diocese of Manga in Burkina Faso.
In Manga most people are subsistence farmers and harvests depend heavily on the weather. Very often the rain season stops too early preventing the normal maturation of crops.
In many villages low capacity dams have been constructed, exploiting the natural characteristics of the land to keep rain water which is lost.
This new project consists of a low capacity dam with a clay dam which will help rationalise crops, solve the problem of water supplies for the home, start a community fish breeding scheme, offer another item of food to the present diet, and the opportunity to commercialise the produce in local markets.
