AFRICA/COMOROS - Flooding, damage to crops, diseases due to heavy rains
Moroni (Agenzia Fides) - Following the heavy rainfall recorded in the wet season from November to May, about 65,000 inhabitants of the Comoro islands, corresponding to 8% of the population, have been severely affected by flooding, lack of electricity, increase in the spread of diseases. According to local aid workers, other 80 000 people in the capital, Moroni, and surrounding areas have suffered lack of water and need water disinfectants. Vanilla producers have seriously been affected in the main island Grand Comore, where 80-90% of their crop has been destroyed. The energy distribution of Moroni continues to worsen and it works with only 3 MW.
On the island of Anjouan malaria cases have increased, particularly in the eastern region of Pomoni where they increased fivefold compared to the period prior to the flooding. There are also other cases of unidentified fevers. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/6/2012)
