AMERICA - Franciscans the world over mobilised for the United Nation’s International Day for Peace

New York (Fides Service) - Franciscan the world over are trying to increase awareness with regard to peace and to build a world of more justice and solidarity in view of the International Day for Peace instituted by the United Nations 2001 which is celebrated today 21 September. The United Nations Assemble has made an official request for the day to be marked by a “global cessation of all hostilities”.
At the invitation of Franciscans International NGO accredited with the United Nations Organisation, communities of friars, nuns and lay Franciscans all over the world who follow the spirituality and life of faith of St Francis of Assisi, today offer special prayers for people suffering in the many centres of conflict.
In many areas Franciscans work to help and rehabilitate persons and communities in post-war situations, to educate youth to a culture of reconciliation and non violence.
With their presence Franciscans bear witness to peace in places and scenes still dominated by the logic of arms including Liberia, Burundi, Israel and Palestine, Colombia, Iraq, Sudan, Bosnia, Central African Republic.
