Nanyuki (Fides Service) - At least ten thousand people flocked to the sports-ground of Christ the King parish in Nanyuki, Kenya, in the archdiocese of Nyeri, for a Mass to celebrate the opening of a “Paulines Bookshop and Media Centre” situated inside the parish compound.
The event was the result of a Bible Study programme held in Nanyuki in February this year. After the programme, the parish decided it was necessary to make the Bible and other religious books available to as many people as possible in order to offer them nourishment for the faith and support for every day life. The aim of the parish was to have free lending and research library as well as a bookshop and multi media centre. Parish priest Father Franco Crabu, spoke about this dream with the Daughters of Saint Paul Sisters who gladly accepted the project. Thanks to the parish and the Sisters the dream was realised and the Paulines Bookshop and Media Center and Library complex was opened in July.
Special guests at the Mass and opening ceremony included Father Anthony Murene sent to represent the archdiocese of Nyeri, Mr Wamai Wamutharimi mayor of Nanyuki accompanied by his municipal counsellors. Everyone voiced appreciation for the new centre, which will serve the whole of this northern region. “It will be a blessing to have a religious book shop in our town” the mayor told those present”. For his part the parish priest Father Murene, thanked the Daughters of St Paul for their work and their example and for making books and other material available at reasonable prices. He stressed the importance of reading and said he was sure the centre would help people improve their quality of life as well as strengthen their faith. The Centre will serve Nanyuki and the whole of the archdiocese of Nyeri, which are a day’s journey from Nairobi, as well as at least six other dioceses which have expressed encouragement and gratitude.
