AFRICA/BURKINA FASO - Erected the diocese of Gaoua and appointment of the first Bishop

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Benedict XVI on November 30, 2011 erected the new Diocese of Gaoua in Burkina Faso, with territory taken from the diocese of Diebougou, making it a suffragan of the archdiocese of Bobo-Dioulasso, and appointed Fr. Modeste Kambou, vicar general of the diocese of Diebougou, as first bishop of the new diocese.
Rev. Modeste Kambou was born on December 4, 1963 in Bouti, in the diocese of Diebougou.
He was ordained a priest on 28 December 1991 and incardinated in the diocese of Diebougou.
After ordination he has held the following positions: 1992-1995: Professor at the Minor Seminary of Saint Tarcisius of Kakapèlè; 1995-1999: Studies for a Degree in Modern Literature at the State University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), 1999-2000: Parochial vicar of Nako; 2000-2001: Professor at the Minor Seminary of Saint Tarcisius Kakapèlè; 2001-2007: Director of the Minor Seminary of Saint Tarcisius Kakapèlè. Since 2007 he has been vicar general of the Diocese of Diebougou.
The new diocese of Gaoua (nom. lat. Gauen/sis/), includes 2 civilian Provinces: Poni (with Gaoua as the capital) and Noumiel (with Batei as its capital). It borders to the north with the mother Diocese of Diebougou, on the east with the Diocese of Wa (Ghana) and south with the Diocese of Abengourou (Ivory Coast). It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bobo-Dioulasso. The parish church of Gaoua, dedicated to the Sacred Heart will beome the Church Cathedral of the erected diocese.
