ASIA/BANGLADESH-Erection of the new diocese of Sylhet and appointment of the first Bishop

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Benedict XVI has erected the new Diocese of Sylhet, in Bangladesh, for the dismantling of the Archdiocese of Dhaka, making it a suffragan of the metropolitan see itself, on July 8, 2011. The Holy Father appointed His Exc. Mgr. Bejoy Nicephorus D'Cruze, OMI, the first Bishop of Sylhet, he has been so far Bishop of the Diocese of Khulna far.
The new diocese of Sylhet (nom. lat. Sylheten / sis /), will include the 4 civil districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulibazar and is suffragan of the Archdiocese of Dhaka. Provisionally, the parish church of Lokhipur, 100 km from Sylhet, will be the Cathedral of the erected diocese. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 08/07/2011)
