OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA-Shortage of priests: Mass every other Sunday for some parishes in the diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes

Monday, 4 July 2011

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - In some Catholic parishes in the diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes, a suffragan of the archdiocese of Sydney, in the Australian Outback of New South Wales, Mass can be celebrated only once every two weeks due to a lack of priests. A committee that is considering the future of the diocese, which is currently pending the appointment of the Bishop, will be in Broken Hill at the end of the month, to discuss possible changes to parish boundaries in the best way to respond to the current pastoral needs. The apostolic Administrator, His Exc. Mgr. Kevin Manning, said that all will be done to maintain the existing parishes. However, "if one keeps the parishes as they are, there will be fewer services. Instead of having a Mass every Sunday, some of these parishes will be able to celebrate Mass once every two weeks", said the Bishop. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 04/07/2011)
