EUROPE/ITALY - First volume of “ Dictionary of the History of the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate”

Rome (Fides Service) - The Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate have published the first volume in French of “Dictionary of the History of the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate: France at the time of the Founder ”. According to information on their web site Omiworld, the volume contains articles regarding the members and mission of the Oblates as well as other information to help understand the history and life of the Congregation.
This first volume, the fruit of long and meticulous work by Father Yvon Beaudoin, comprises 494 articles, mostly biographies. They include 331 Oblates who made their vows during the life time of the Founder and who worked or died in France. Another 71 biographies are about people who knew Eugenio de Mazenod and who are mentioned in his writings. The work is a tool of research and source of information about people, places and events connected with the beginning of the Congregation. The volume is in French and in two years time the English version should be ready.
According to recent statistics, in the world today there are 4,440, Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (OMI) present all over the world. Founded in Aix-en-Provence on 25 January 1816 by Satin Eugenio de Mazenod, they will hold their 34th general chapter from 30 August to 28 September 2004. (S.L.)
