Vanimo (Agenzia Fides) – The Church in Papua New Guinea (PNG) celebrates “the Year for Youth”, with the intention of giving special attention to youth ministry in a nation in which people under 20 years of age constitute about 50% of the population. There are many prayer and awareness raising activities organised, as a journey of spiritual and pastoral care preparation for World Youth Day in Madrid in August 2011, an event which man young people from PNG hope to attend.
Recently, for example, in the Diocese of Vanimo a lengthy Stations of the Cross was prepared by youth from the five coastal parishes. More than 400 youth participated in a prayer vigil before beginning the five kilometre journey which took about four hours and concluded with a Mass, presided at by the Vicar General, Fr Tommy Thomas, at the Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
