EUROPE/ITALY - “Women of the Gospel for Mission ad gentes today” -22 August 30 September 18th general chapter of the Comboni Missionary Sisters on Evangelisation

Tuesday, 13 July 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - “What is important for me (and this has been the one and only passion of my whole life, and it will be until my death and of which I am not in the least ashamed) is the conversion of Africa, and that God will continue to give me the auxiliary tools necessary” (St. Daniele Comboni). This passion to proclaim the Gospel to the most needy and abandoned peoples still burns in the hearts of 1,659 women Religious called by God to live and actualise today on four continents (Africa, America, Asia, Europe), the same passion for evangelisation which filled St. Daniele Comboni, founder of the "Pie Madri della Nigrizia", known as Comboni Missionary Sisters.
Today the challenges presented by mission are many and even though enormous and out of proportion for our energies, they call for new, bold and courageous response. The next general chapter of the Comboni Missionaries which will be held in Rome 22 August to 30 September, on the theme “Women of the Gospel for Mission ad gentes today”, will offer the Sisters an opportunity to reflect on their work of evangelisation and to set out on the roads of a world in rapid evolution where 75% of humanity has yet to encounter Jesus Christ and where, besides signs of light and hope, there are serious situations of injustice and oppression. Some 64 sisters will take part in the chapter general, 24 by right (Superior General, 4 general counsellors 19 Provincial Superiors) and 40 elected Delegates.
In a letter announcing the general chapter Superior General Mother Adele Bramble said “this 18th general chapter is a new gift from Comboni to our congregation. He wants us to find again the freshness of our charisma; he wants us to experience the transforming power of the ensuing mandate, which allows his passion to manifest itself with new intensity. Comboni will never abandon us. He prays with us and for us”. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 13/7/2004; Righe 23; Parole 330)
