OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Appeal by Caritas Australia for solidarity towards the most vulnerable communities

Friday, 4 February 2011

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) – Caritas Australia launched an appeal to all Australians to demonstrate solidarity to the most vulnerable communities, reports the Australian “The Catholic Weekly”, published by the Archdiocese of Sydney. Last year, reported Cath News (an Australian news service) in a message sent to Fides, there were another 64 million people around the globe who were plunged into situations of extreme poverty. “For all those who experience natural disaster, for all those who bear the burden of intractable poverty, the value of your steadfast support and solidarity is immeasurable,” Caritas Australia's chief executive officer, Jack de Groot said. He said that solidarity also marked the generosity of Caritas partners who responded in compassion to Australia's own recent flooding disaster. “Our partners in Sri Lanka, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Brazil have offered their solidarity and prayers as our nations experience historic flooding; though Australians may have greater resources to recover, our partners know that human suffering is not a numbers game,” he stated.
