Rome (Fides Service) - There is great satisfaction among the athletes of “St John of God” hospital in Genzano: a shower of medals rewarded efforts in regional and national events particularly qualification for Special Olympics Italia on Rome 3 to 10 July.
These national “Special Olympics Italia” are for athletes with mental disabilities: “sport helps personal growth, autonomy and full integration of people with mental disabilities. It is a therapy ” the sports director at Fatebenefratelli said.
This year for the first time the patients will take part in athletics: the Federazione Sport Disabili introduced a lower level of shorter relay races to enable athletes with less cognitive potential to take part.. The Fatebenefratelli team has been enriched with new members all very young mostly adolescents representing a new burst of energy for this sports group.
For Fatebenefratelli athletes this is a moment of confrontation in which besides a victory in sports there is also personal growth and integration. (AP) (2/7/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:21; Parole:235)
