OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - A 10-year health plan to improve health for all

Wednesday, 15 September 2010

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) – Catholic health care institutions must find a way to ensure all Australians adequate access to basic care, said Jesuit Father Frank Brennan at the recent Australian Catholic Health Conference 2010 in Adelaide. "As representatives of Catholic Healthcare, we must always be guided by the principle that there is no class of people we can turn our backs toward." Father Brennan said that a practical commitment to the poor must also include a commitment to the mentally disabled , the elderly, and those living in rural areas, particularly Aboriginal people. There are six challenges in the health sector over the next ten years: the reforms of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), the problem of rationalization, removal of barriers in healthcare, social security, and education, the declining number of religious, maintaining an option for the poor, and becoming effective advocates of reform.
