Thursday, 1 July 2004

Strasbourg (Fides Service) - A Congress of National Vocation Services in European countries promoted by the Council of the European Bishops’ Conference opens today 1 July in Strasbourg. The theme of the encounter which will conclude on Sunday 4 July, is: “ Good Master what must I do? - Accompany young people on their vocational path”
The congress will focus on three themes: understanding the situation of youth today (context cultural social, economic, political ...); the newness of the Gospel and vocations in these new times; proposing a vocation: testimony and experience.
The European Vocations Service is an agile structure realised by the National Vocations Services in European countries. Started in 1980s with informal meetings of a small number of countries it extended to include an ever larger number of nations also in Eastern Europe. In 2001 the CCEE approved EVS Statutes on an experimental basis. Presently EVS is chaired by the Archbishop of Salzburg (Austria), Archbishop Alois Kothgasser. The Secretary General elected by the assembly is Rev. Father Kevin Doran, of the National Vocations’ Centre of Ireland. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 1/7/2004; Righe 14; Parole 181)
