AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - Arizona immigration law totally unjust, says Mgr. Escobar
San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic Church in El Salvador sincerely hopes for a repeal of the new immigration law in Arizona, otherwise the image of the United States as the most democratic country in the world will be undermined.
“We are all against the law. We sincerely hope the judge charged with the matter will opt for a repeal, because the law in question is not only anti-immigrant, it is totally anti-human rights” said Archbishop José Luis Escobar of San Salvador.
The Archbishop said the Bill proposed in Arizona “turns innocent men and women into criminals and this cannot be allowed to happen in a country such as the United States of America, a nation of democracy. To enforce such a law would put the entire country in a very bad light” (see Fides 27/04/2010).
The Archbishop of San Salvador also mentioned the proposal which the United States Catholic Bishops' Conference made to the US government. The US Bishops propose a general reform of immigration laws and for a solution to be found to the problems of 11 million illegal immigrants.
