AMERICA/CANADA - Exhibition of documents regarding Amerindians in the 19th century collected by a Jesuit missionary
Montreal (Agenzia Fides) - Perhaps few have heard of Fr. Nicolas Point, a Jesuit missionary, and his precious collection of writings and drawings concerning the life of Amerindians in Canada and the United States in the mid 19th century. The Fondo Fr. Nicolas Point of the Provincial Archives is of incomparable importance both esthetical and documentary, Fides learned from the Jesuit General Curia. Unfortunately little has been written about his work which deserves to be better valorised. His minute handwriting, his tiny drawings and paintings hidden within other works are not easy to exhibit and valorise. Hence the initiative to make this material better known. "We had the idea - the archive team explained- of reproducing and enlarging the artist's the drawings and paintings and exhibiting them in public. This Summer the Atrium of Maison Bellarmin in Montreal will host an exhibition on the life of this marvellous personage. The exhibits include the tales of his journeys, pictures, official papers, documents, a few exhibits belonging to his brother Pierre Point, also a Jesuit. Visitors can admire other reproductions, originals and documents in the display cabinets and in the Consulting Hall ". (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 23/7/2010)
