EUROPE/SWITZERLAND - Over 500,000 women all over the world die during pregnancy or childbirth and 18 million pregnant mothers develop disabilities or chronic diseases

Rome (Fides Service) - Every year more than half a million women in the world die during pregnancy or childbirth mainly because of the lack of health care in poor countries.
Due to pathologies during pregnancy, every year 18 million women develop disabilities or chronic diseases. According to a survey involving 169 countries, most of the deaths could be avoided, but 40% of the women in live in developing countries and give birth without assistance.
The women most at risk are young mothers between 15 and 19 years of age among whom the maternal death rate is higher than mothers aged 20 to 24.(AP) (23/6/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:15; Parole:181)
