Monday, 21 June 2004

Moscow (Fides Service) - On Sunday 13 June as in many other countries, Catholics in Moscow celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi with deep devotion and solemnity. According to the local Catholic weekly “Svet Evangelia”, some 800 people took part in the Mass in the Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, followed by the traditional public procession with the Blessed Sacrament. Concelebrating with Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of the Mother of God diocese in Moscow was also Papal Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Mennini and eight others, bishops and priests. As the procession moved through the streets of the capital, little girls in white dresses who recently made their first Holy Communion threw rose petals as a carpet for the path of the Blessed Sacrament.
This was the sixth year running that the Catholic community in Moscow obtained permission from the local authorities to hold the Corpus Christi procession through the streets of the capital. There is deep devotion to the Eucharist here and all through the year on the first Sunday of every month it is a tradition in the Catholic churches in Moscow to have a short procession with the Blessed Sacrament inside the church.
