Vatican City (Fides Service) - The celebration of the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ and the announcement of the Year of the Eucharist were the focal point of Pope John Paul II’s address on Sunday 13 June before reciting the midday Angelus prayer from his window overlooking the thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square to receive his blessing. “This is the feast of the Eucharist, the sacrament in which Jesus left us the living memorial of his Paschal mystery, the central event of human history - the Pope said recalling that in Italy and some other countries the feast is postponed from the Thursday to the following Sunday. -. It is good to see people gather around the Blessed Sacrament to adore Christ, to accompany him in procession through the streets, expressing with many signs of devotion their faith in the living Christ and the joy of his presence”.
John Paul II also mentioned the newly announced Year of the Eucharist which will begin in October this year to coincide with the 48th International Eucharistic Congress, to be held in Guadalajara (Mexico), and will close in October 2005 with the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. “The Year of the Eucharist is part of a pastoral programme which I outlined in the Apostolic Letter Novo millennio ineunte - the Pope said - when I urged Christians to " start afresh from Christ". Contemplating more assiduously the face of the Incarnate Word, truly present in the Sacrament, the faithful will learn the art of prayer and commitment themselves to that high measure of Christian life indispensable to development effectively new evangelisation.”
“The Eucharist is at the centre of the life of the Church ” the Pope said, and he entrusted the Year of the Eucharist to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “woman of the Eucharist”, that it may “help every community grow in faith and love for the mystery of the Lord’s Body and Blood”.
