ASIA/TAIWAN - Taipei diocese prepares for annual Corpus Christi procession through the streets and National Eucharistic Congress in December

Taipei (Agenzia Fides) - “The Eucharist is the heart of our Christian life. As we adore the Body and Blood of Christ and are filled with God’s love we are spurred to go out to serve all people. It is through works of charity in fact that each local Church gives witness of God’s love for all men and women ”said Archbishop Joseph Cheng of Taipei as his diocese prepares to celebrate Corpus Christi on June 12 with a procession involving numerous priests and religious as well as laity from every parish in the diocese.
The Mass is celebrated on a hillside location outside of the town and the procession moves through the streets of the busy city. For the elderly and sick unable to travel to Taipei, parishes organise special hours of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of the Rosary.
On Wednesday June 9, in preparation for Corpus Christi, the clergy of Taipei diocese took part in a Day of Retreat
The Archbishop told Fides that during the homily of the Corpus Christi Mass he will tell his people that Pope John Paul II has announced a special Year of the Eucharist, October 2004 - October.
The Archbishop, recently appointed a member of the Secretariat for the next ordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome, also said that in preparation for a National Eucharistic Congress in Taiwan, planned for December this year, the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference has asked every parish to hold special days of reflection on the Eucharist and other initiatives.
