The Holy Father Benedict XVI in the month of September continued to reside in his Summer Residence in Castel Gandolfo, from where, on Sunday 6th he made a pastoral visit to Viterbo and Bagnoregio. On Saturday the 12th , in St Peter's Basilica, the Holy Father presided Holy Mass with the ordination of five new Bishops. On the 19th in Castel Gandolfo, Benedict XVI had a meeting with the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches and announced a Special Synod for the Middle East. From 26th to 28th, the Supreme Pontiff made an Apostolic Visit to the Czech Republic.
Special audiences granted by the Holy Father in this period included two groups of Bishops from Brazil on ad limina visit, the sponsors of the Holy See Pavilion last year at Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain, participants at a Meeting for recently appointed Bishops.
Papal Messages were addressed as follows: September 3 to the 11th Inter-Christian Symposium; September 22nd to the UN Summit on Climate Changes; September 29 to participants in the International Retreat for Priests held in Ars, France, on the theme "The joy of being a priest: consecrated for the salvation of the world".
After the Angelus prayer on Sunday 20, the Holy Father expressed his grief for the death of six Italian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, assuring the bereaved families of his closeness and prayers.
