AFRICA/UGANDA - New rules for Nile water management are the focus of a meeting in Uganda.

Wednesday, 2 June 2004

Kampala (Fides Agency) - The legal framework regulating the Nile basin is the focus of a meeting starting yesterday in Entebbe, in Uganda. The meeting gathers together the representatives of the ten countries overlooking the Nile basin: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC), Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
The delegates debate on how to create new rules for Nile water management, to substitute the old colonial ones giving Egypt preferential treatment.
In 1929 Great Britain and Egypt signed a treaty stating other countries should ask for Cairo’s permission before embarking on projects compromising the flowing of the Nile waters. Egypt and the other countries are now seeking new mechanisms for the allocation of the waters, taking into account the necessities of all countries overlooking the Nile basin. (L.M.)
