OCEANIA/SOLOMON ISLANDS - Year for Priests brings prayer and encouragement for the clergy on the islands

Monday, 5 October 2009

Honiara (Agenzia Fides) – The Year for Priests is an occasion for reaffirmation in one's own vocation and renewal in the mission. This was the underlying theme that marked the encounter held for clergy on the Solomon Islands, in Auki for three days of spiritual retreat.
The retreat was led by Bishop Christopher Cardone of Auki, who spoke to the local clergy on the various themes and points given by Pope Benedict XVI for the Year for Priests.
The figure of the Cure of Ars was taken as a point of reference, for the priests to evaluate their own priestly ministry, on a spiritual and pastoral level. All were filled with a great desire for renewal in their own ministry which, as was seen in the retreat, should be characterized by a “passion for humanity and for the Gospel.”
The priests of the Solomon Islands also recalled their brethren who have died in recent years, who dedicated their lives to evangelizing the islands.
The participants held a prayer vigil for vocations to the priesthood, united to the Universal Church.
The encounter, which gave many spiritual fruits, is the first of a series to be held in the Year for Priests in the Pacific Islands area. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 5/10/2009)
