AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Pastoral Care of Aboriginal Peoples, the Continental Mission, the Year of the Priest, all among issues on the agenda for the Plenary Assembly May 11-16

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) – The Argentinean Bishops' Conference began its 97th Plenary Assembly yesterday, May 11, in Pilar (Buenos Aires). The Assembly ends at noon on May 16.
Cardinal Jorge Maria Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires and President of the Argentinean Bishops' Conference, began the Assembly with an Opening Mass at 7pm, which was concelebrated by all the Bishops. Among the issues to be addressed during the Assembly are: exchange of ideas, initiatives in regards to the Church and the country, especially in light of the upcoming elections on June 28. They will also address issues in reference to the Pastoral Care of Aboriginal Peoples, the probable changes in the Rite of Christian Initiation Catechism, and the evaluation of the Continental Mission being held in the dioceses of Argentina. They will also propose initiatives for the Year of the Priest declared by the Holy Father Benedict XVI, review the cause of canonization of “Cura Brochero,” the priest who evangelized the sierras of Cordoba (Argentina), traveling on a donkey, as a possible miracle through his intercession has recently been presented to the Holy See. The Bishops will also review reports from the Bishops' Commissions for Catholic Education, Social Communications, and Penitentiary Pastoral Care. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 12/5/2009)
