EUROPE/RUSSIA - More than 4,500 Russians including 240 children under 14 have died of AIDS since registration of cases started

Rome (Fides Service) - According to the Russian Research Centre for the Prevention and Elimination of AIDS more than 4,500 people including 240 children under 14 died of HIV/AIDS since the registration of HIV+ cases started in January in 1987. Since that year a total number of 280, 000, including almost 10,000 children cases have been registered in Russia. Children are the most vulnerable among those infected by the HIV/AIDS virus.
According to a recent survey in Moscow 54% of those questioned said they “feared” people with AIDS, 20% said they found them “repulsive” and 10% had a sense of “indignation”. Moreover 48% admitted to avoiding contact with infected persons, and 46% asked for more rigid rules to isolate confirmed cases of HIV/AIDS. (AP) (19/5/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:16; Parole:176)
