AFRICA/MALAWI - Supreme Court of Justice calls for postponement of 18 May elections

Saturday, 15 May 2004

Lilongwe (Fides Service)- There is uncertainty in Malawi after the Supreme Court of Justice passed a sentence to postpone political and presidential elections scheduled for 18 May (see Fides 12 May 2004). The electoral Commission has not yet decided whether it will respect the sentence and so far the election date has not been altered.
The Court recognised that were irregularities in the electoral campaign and in the registration of voters. The electoral commission printed 7.3m ballots to cater for voters initially estimated at 6.7m. But the voters' roll was then reduced to only 5.7m. The Opposition accused the media of giving space only to the electoral campaign of the Party of out-going president, Bakili Muluzi. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 15/5/2004 righe 16 parole 171)
