Andong (Fides Service) - More than 1,000 people attended the inauguration of the new compound of Andong Cathedral with a Mass presided by Bishop John Chrysostom Kwon Hyok. Special guests included Bishop John Choi Young-soo, Auxiliary of Taegu, and Bernerd Tschang In-san, Vicar general of Cheongju diocese and diocesan priest in Andong.
The old building was constructed in 1927 and them moved to its present site in 1949: over the past few years the Cathedral compound, which had become too small for the fast growing Catholic community, wasrenovated and extended to make room for the many pastoral activities of this lively local Church. Today it has a chapel, a large hall for meetings, and smaller rooms for conferences and meetings, rooms for the priests, sisters and also visitors as well as a room for recreation and social activities for faithful of all different age groups.
In his homily Bishop Kwon said: “Today the cathedral complex is all renewed. We hope it will become a diocesan pastoral Centre where our people may grow in faith and strength for the mission to announce the Gospel to all. It is my hope that it will be a vital centre for all who come here ”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 4/5/2004 lines 20 words 218)
