Honiara (Fides Service) - “Rich in my pastoral experience in these 36 years a priest serving the community of Solomon Islands I say to the Church of Solomon Islands: Look to the future!”. This appeal was launched by Father Michael Aike, today Monsignore, the first local Catholic priest ordained in the Solomon Islands 36 years ago. Telling Fides about his long years of experience Father Michael said: “My interest for modern theology helped me to see how the Church has grown and moved forward thanks to Vatican II. Young people today need words and models and constant encouragement and trust and to be given responsibilities ”.
Bishop Gerard Loft of Auki diocese where Mgr Michael ministers, says of him: “His ministry has been marked by simple life style, obedience to carry out all the tasks entrusted, patience and thoughtfulness and respect for others. His years of witness have contributed not only to help the church grow in Auki, but the Church in the whole of Solomon Islands. He is known and respected by all: a father figure for youth and a valid counsellor for the Bishops ”. Because of poor health Mgr Michael has had to cut down on his commitments but his personality and spirituality will continue to be an example for all, his whole life was dedicated to the mission.
At the age of 71 Mgr Michael Aike, was ordained in1966. “He was a great gift to our Church ”, local Catholics told Fides. His service was constant and tireless. His motto was “Lord increase my love for you and for others ”.
He worked in many different parishes: Rohnari, Tarapaina, Buma, Makaruka, Avuavu, Wainoni Bay, Kukum, Kirakira, Manivovo, and everywhere he is remembered for the dedication and humility with which he carried out his priestly ministry.
He was appointed Vicar General of diocese of Aiku with the title of Monsignor. He was also awarded a medal by Solomon Islands for social work especially in times of natural disasters. Mgr Michael studied also in Italy, United States, Japan and the Philippines, specialising in social anthropology which enabled him to understand better and serve better the Church and the people of Solomon Islands.
