VATICAN - The Pope addresses the Plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for Culture: “It falls to Bishops and the faithful to identify and take into consideration the essential questions and longings of the men and women of our times and to dialogue with individual persons and with peoples to promote, in an original and inculturated manner, the message of the Gospel and the person of Christ the Redeemer.”

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - “You outline a new geography of non belief and religious indifference in the world, and you note a rupture in the transmission of Christian faith and values... it falls to Bishops and the faithful to identify and take into consideration the essential questions and longings of the men and women of our times and to dialogue with individual persons and with peoples to promote, in an original and inculturated manner, the message of the Gospel and the person of Christ the Redeemer. Cultural and artistic expressions are not lacking in richness or resources for the transmission of the Christian message.” Pope John Paul II said this in his address to the participants at the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for Culture whom he received in audience on Saturday 13 March.
In his Address the Pope said that today there are signs that men and women are in search of meaning to life, as we see from cultural phenomena and new religious movements present in South America, and also in Africa and Asia. “It is the desire of all men and women to understand the profound meaning of their life, to respond to the fundamental questions with regard to the origin and end of life to walk to the happiness to which they aspire.” The Pope then recalled the indispensable contribution offered by the world of culture, art, literature to the building of the new Europe, so that society may be founded “not on materialism, but on moral and spiritual values ”. Today Christians are called to make a “new leap forward in the intellectual field in order to propose substantial reflections which reveal to the younger generations the truth about mankind and about God…through philosophical and catechetical formation young people will be able to discern the truth.”
Lastly the Holy Father reminded the Assembly participants that they must “discern the great cultural changes and their positive aspects to help Bishops provide adequate responses which will open men and women to the news of Christ’s Word”. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 15/3/2004 - Righe 23; Parole 320)
