AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - Dengue fever alarm: since the beginning of the year 436 cases reported

Rome (Fides Service) - Official sources say that in El Salvador since the beginning of the year 436 cases of Dengue were reported, 18 were cases of haemorrhagic dengue. The situation is concerning because the number is considerably higher than last year. In fact in 2003, between January 1 and March 7 a total of 259 cases of 'Classical Dengue Fever were reported and 22 cases of haemorrhagic Dengue. In the 12 months of 2003 a total of 3,180 cases were reported, 3000 cases of classical Dengue fever and 108 cases of the haemorrhagic Dengue, and 6 of the patients, mostly children, died.
