CARIBBEAN/CUBA - AIDS: delegates from 14 different countries meet to discuss ways to fight the disease of the century

Rome (Fides Service) - “Caribbean, many languages, many cultures together to fight virus HIV/AIDS” is the title of a Conference being held at Santo Domingo, organised by the Caribbean Centre for Epidemology CEC, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Medical Science department of Porto Rico University. The 1,800 participants, 1,500 from Caribbean countries and 300 from countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and central America, will reflect on various themes including: support for HIV/AIDS patients; mother to child transmission; discrimination; economic impact; vaccine research.
According to information issued in 2000 by the United Nations 9 of the 12 countries with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection are in the Caribbean, Haiti being the most affected with 6% of the adult population, followed by Bahamas 3.5% and the Dominican Republic 2.5%, and pandemic has left at least 250,000 children orphans.
