Rome (Fides Service) - Only a few years ago cancer of the colon, breast and prostrate were deadly and feared; diagnosis was almost always a sentence for which there was no appeal. Today thanks to progress in research, information and prevention, cancer is increasingly more curable.
Cancer strikes people all over the world. In Europe alone in the year 2000, according to a recent survey, the number of cases registered was 1.892,000 and 1.156,000 people died of cancer. In Italy alone in the same year, there were 260,767 registered cases of cancer and 156,418 registered deaths of cancer. Italy has the second highest rate in Europe, lower than Germany and higher than France. (AP) (6/3/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:15; Parole:156)
