Lima (Fides Service) - The Bishops of Peru have voiced deep concern for increasing social-political deterioration and loss of moral values which provoke internal clashes, closure on the part of those with the serious responsibility to lead the destiny of the nation - executive, legislative and judicial power,” in a statement “At this difficult hour” dated 16 February 2004. The Bishops say that this responsibility falls also to political parties and the media which have an important role to play.
The Bishops say all Peruvians have contributed to creating the present situation which afflicts the nation and therefore they urge each and all to, “make a great effort to reach development based on justice, truth and solidarity ”.
“We want and we search for a country without division, where all have equal conditions. But above all we desire a Peru where Peruvians, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, can believe again in the country which despite its fragility and limits can be a place where life is worth living”, the Bishops affirm strongly.
At the end of the statement the Bishops, in their role as shepherds and guides, launch a heartfelt appeal: “We must not close our capacity to serve the country …We must never lose faith in sincere dialogue”. Lastly imploring the Lord’s blessing on the nation they urge all leaders to participate actively to overcome this difficult moment (Agenzia Fides 18/12/2004, righe parole )
