ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Seoul archdiocese opens an Institute of Theological Studies for lay people

Friday, 13 February 2004

Seoul (Fides Service) - It is a known fact that the laity are the engine of the Church in Korea: their valid cooperation in all fields of pastoral work puts the Church in South Korea among those which have better understood and implemented the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. Korean lay Catholics are well formed in the faith. In fact the country has several centres of theological studies for lay persons. A new study centre was recently opened in Seoul in the Ogeum-dong parish situated in the south east of the city. The new Catholic Institute will offer courses in theology and pastoral for catechists, church animators, special ministers of the Eucharist etc.
The courses are organised to fit in with the life of working people and families. Classes are held once a week for a period of six months.
The curriculum includes the subjects of theology, philosophy, Biblical studies, Korean religious writings, moral theology, spirituality, the Sacraments, Mariology, liturgy and Church history taught by university teachers and experts in the different fields.
