Thursday, 12 February 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - The World Health Organisation excludes that two sisters who died of bird flu in Vietnam were infected person to person. WHO says tests on the girls revealed that the genetic material is of aviary origin with no gene of human influence. In the meantime in Vietnam tests confirmed that a 22 year old man has bird flu bringing to 20 the total number of infected persons in Vietnam, 14 of whom have died. An outbreak of bird flu is reported in Shaoguan, hitherto untouched by the illness. Shaoguan is in the province of Guangdong, the 14th of China’s 31 provinces to be affected. In China the number of confirmed cases is 23, and suspect cases 46. Officially non of the persons were infected by birds.
