AMERICA/GUATEMALA - Every day 250 new cases of diarrhoea among children. 23 die of rotavirus: 90% under 5

Rome (Fides Service) – Two weeks ago an epidemic of rotavirus struck Guatemala. 250 new cases every day and 23 deaths: 14 around Guatemala City, 1 in Suchitepéquez, 2 in Sacatepéquez and 6 in Escuintla, mostly children under 5 years old 5.
Since 15 January the national hospital network has reported 19, 324 patients with diarrhoea, severe dehydration and vomiting, 50% were diagnosed as having the rotavirus, 121 under the age of 1 year; 87 aged between 1 and 4 and 11 five year olds
Guatemala’s health ministry has declared an emergency situation for public health services and urged people to take basic precautions: washing hands before and after using sanitary services, wash food before eating, use only clean water.
