Thursday, 17 July 2008

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) – The Latin American Bishops’ Conference (CELAM) will hold its annual Coordination Meeting July 22-24, where they will evaluate the activities that took place during the 2007-2008 year and plan for the upcoming events of 2009. The meeting is attended by the President and leading officers, the Bishops who are heads of departments and centers, the Bishops responsible for the sections within each department, and the executive secretaries and directors of centers. There will be a total of 60 Bishops from all over the Americas participating in the meeting.
During the Meeting, each of the members of CELAM will present a report that will be subject to approval by the President. Economic reports and reports from each department and center on the past year will also be presented. Later on, there will be various meetings held by each department and center, so as to make decisions in planning and programming for 2009. The process is done far in advance so that the plans and programs can be presented first to the cooperative entities that finance CELAM’s activities.
After the meetings among departments and centers, the decisions will be presented to the entire assembly, so as to give the general outlook as to the activities that have been planned. In this meeting, all the activities and decisions of CELAM will be especially ordered towards the event of the Great Continental Mission, which will be officially launched this August 17, in the closing ceremony of the Third American Missionary Congress (CAM 3) in Quito (Ecuador).
