Wednesday, 9 July 2008

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – The initiative “Asamblea Mundial de Parlamentarios y Gobernantes por la Vida y la Familia” (“World Assembly of Parliament Members and Governors for Life and the Family”) has also reached Mexico. After having its official beginnings in Chile, it is now extending into various countries as awareness spreads of the need for network action in these areas.
On July 2-3, the First Mexican Congress for Parliament Members and Governors for Life and the Family was hosted in Mexico. Going beyond a mere reflection on family and life policies, the concrete objective was to form a permanent and institutional coordination group among politicians of various groups and beliefs, but that stand out for their governmental action with “a family perspective.”
Some of the speeches given during these days of the Congress were: “Life and Family”; “Right to life, juridical views and human rights”; “Family, education, and freedom in Mexico”; “The right to life in Mexico”; “Public Policies with a family perspective”; “Current situation of the family in Mexico”; “The advance of legislation with gender perspectives in Mexico”; “The challenge of law-making for life and the family”; “Importance of family integration in the world today”
During the Congress, Benjamín Correa Palacios, one of the main figures of World Action in Chile, explained how the Constitution of the “Acción Mundial de Parlamentarios y Gobernantes por la Vida y la Familia” in Santiago de Chile came about and their was a formal creation, signing, and declaration of the Constitution of the Mexican “Acción Mundial de Parlamentarios y Gobernantes por la Vida.”
The “World Action of Parliament Members and Governors for Life and the Family” began November 10, 2007 in Chile with a little over 50 members of Parliament and governors from 17 countries, with the “Santiago Act,” a document that in Spain alone received signatures from 60 politicians (see Fides 13/11/2007). In its first meeting, in addition to discussing how to promote a culture of life and reject the culture of death, working in favor of life, the politicians present sent a letter the Secretary General of the United Nations, questioning the use of abortion as a means of family planning by the UN’s Population Fund.
The next meeting will take place in Spain, with collaboration from the University “Santo Tomas” of Santiago de Chile and the Spanish Foundation “San Pablo-CEU”, with the goal of increasing the number of participants (countries, Parliament members, and governors) in this “Commitment to Life.” (RG) (Agenzia Fides 09/07/2008)
